Moku ʻO Wailuku Ahupuaʻa Sign Project announces next meeting

During a previous community meeting on the Moku ʻO Wailuku Ahupuaʻa Sign project, Vernon Kalanikau shared information on the 12 moku on Maui island. 

The next community meeting for the Moku ʻO Wailuku Ahupuaʻa Sign project will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at the J. Walter Cameron Center Auditorium located at 95 Mahalani Street in Wailuku.

The Moku ʻO Wailuku Ahupuaʻa Sign project is a cultural grants program funded by the County of Maui Office of Economic Development. It aims to bring awareness of Maui Nui’s ancient land division system.

“We extend a big mahalo to everyone who has attended the past two community meetings and shared their manao on the Moku ʻO Wailuku,” said project coordinator Vernon Kalanikau. “Their input on these ahupua'a which includes the areas of Kahului, Wailuku, Waikapu, Waiʻehu, Waiheʻe, Spreckelsville and Maui Veterans Highway (formerly known as Mokulele Highway) has provided us with invaluable insights that have helped to shape the signage content and design, as well as the location of these ahupua'a signs.”

During the February 25th meeting, Kalanikau will unveil preliminary designs and identify potential signage locations. Installation of the completed signs is slated for June 2020.

The community meeting is hosted by the Maui Food Technology Center. Refreshments will be served.
